Who this page is for
- Prospective EMT students in the Memphis metro choosing between a small set of civilian programs
- Aspiring Memphis Fire Department firefighters. MFD requires every firefighter to hold a Paramedic license within 3 years of hire (Training Academy page)
- Out-of-state paramedics considering MFD's Single-Role ambulance track or the Firefighter Paramedic Lateral track
Memphis-specific angle: there is exactly one civilian CoAEMSP-recognized paramedic pathway in the metro (Southwest Tennessee CC); the dominant EMS employer (MFD) runs its own in-house paramedic school that isn't open to the public.

STCC reports 100% NREMT cognitive and psychomotor pass rates for 2023, 2024, and 2025 with 100% positive placement (source) and is the only CAAHEP/CoAEMSP-accredited civilian paramedic pathway in the metro. An "EMS Institute" run by Christ Community Health Services appeared in secondary search results during research, but its program page returned a 404. Confirm status before enrolling. None of the publicly-listed Memphis EMT programs advertise FISDAP as an entrance assessment.
The firefighter path: Memphis Fire Department
MFD is the primary 911 EMS provider for the city and, per the department, "the largest EMS system in the state of Tennessee and the mid-south". ~35 ambulances daily, with paramedics also on fire apparatus (memphistn.gov).
Track 1: Fire Recruit (entry-level)
- EMT required at application? No. Paramedic is preferred. Alternates on the Fire Recruit posting include TN Firefighter I or II, two years of college, or honorable military discharge.
- Post-hire progression: Recruits without a medical license must earn EMT within 12 months, AEMT within 24, and Paramedic within 48 of hire; continued-employment policy requires Paramedic licensure within 3 years (Training Academy; JEMS). Verify the live cadence before planning around it.
- Cert training: Paid and in-house. MFD's training center is "the only non-university or college in the State of Tennessee authorized to educate paramedics" (memphistn.gov).
- Written exam: Replaced with interviews plus a customized fitness matrix (JEMS).
- Baseline requirements: Class D Tennessee driver's license, one semester of college-level math, two semesters of college-level English, plus one of the alternate qualifications above.
Track 2: Firefighter Paramedic. Lateral
The lateral posting requires TN NFPA Firefighter I and II plus EMT or AEMT, 2 years full-time fire service (or 5 volunteer), and ages 19–45. Paramedic must be obtained within 24 months (if AEMT at hire) or 36 months (if EMT at hire).
Track 3: Single-Role Paramedic (ambulance only)
The single-role posting requires a current state Paramedic license (reciprocity-eligible) and prior NREMT Paramedic. Age ≤50 at hire. Training: 2 weeks in-class plus 6 weeks paid field training, then 12-month probation. Shelby County residence within 6 months.
Published pay ladder
From the Fire Recruit and Single-Role Paramedic postings:
- Recruit: $47,135.14
- Probationary EMT: $55,512.60
- Probationary AEMT: $57,980.26
- Firefighter Paramedic: $69,560.14
- Single-Role Paramedic: $64,736.49
MFD's paramedic figures sit at or above the Memphis MSA paramedic median of $65,910 and well above the Tennessee state paramedic median of $52,860.
Tennessee state licensure
Tennessee uses the NREMT cognitive exam plus a state/Board-approved practical for EMT, AEMT, and Paramedic (Tenn. Comp. R. & Regs. 1200-12-01-.04; TN EMS Board licensure page). The licensing process must be completed within two years of course completion. Minimum age 18 with HS diploma or GED.
Licensure levels: EMR, EMT, AEMT, Paramedic, and the Critical Care Paramedic (PARA-CC) endorsement (general information). EMT-IV was retired in Tennessee on December 31, 2016 and replaced by AEMT. Any source referring to EMT-IV as a current credential is outdated (EMTLIFE thread documenting the transition).
Reciprocity is submitted electronically via lars.tn.gov; paper applications are not accepted. Applicants must hold a current out-of-state license or (if federally employed) current NREMT, plus a criminal background check. Processing takes up to 14 days after documents are complete.
Renewal runs a two-year cycle with CE tracked via CE Broker (free Basic Account).
FAQ
Real questions from public EMS forums (EMTLIFE, Firehouse Forums, Quora), answered from the sources above.
I'm a Tennessee-certified First Responder. What's the best way to get my EMT? Is there a state that allows online training or a way to test out?
Enroll in a state-approved EMT-Basic program and sit for the NREMT cognitive plus the state/Board-approved practical. Tennessee does not allow fully online EMT certification. Practical skills must be completed in person. And there is no "test out" pathway from First Responder to EMT. STCC offers a single-semester fast-track. Is there a short bridge course for my NREMT-B into Tennessee? Does my NREMT mean nothing here?
Your NREMT-B is directly usable. Tennessee accepts reciprocity from current NREMT certification via lars.tn.gov. The legacy EMT-IV level this question referenced no longer exists. Tennessee retired it on Dec 31, 2016. No bridge course is required for an NREMT-B coming in at the EMT level. Source: original question from user SBlakeS, EMTLIFE, Sep 1, 2014.
Are EMT-IV jobs easy to come by in Tennessee?
The question is moot. EMT-IV was retired Dec 31, 2016; current levels are EMR, EMT, AEMT, Paramedic, and Critical Care Paramedic. AEMT is the equivalent successor level. MFD specifically uses AEMT as an intermediate probationary rank at $57,980.26. Source: original question from user SBlakeS, EMTLIFE, Sep 1, 2014; pay from the Fire Recruit page.
What pay is Memphis Fire offering for single-role paramedic?
$64,736.49 annual on the Single-Role Paramedic posting, with 2 weeks in-class plus 6 weeks paid field training and a 12-month probation. Shelby County residence within 6 months. Above the Tennessee state paramedic median of $52,860. Source: original question from user RocketMedic, EMTLIFE, Mar 28, 2018.
What steps should I take to become a firefighter if I'm already in an EMT class?
For Memphis: finish the EMT, then apply to the MFD Fire Recruit posting. EMT satisfies the "EMS certification" alternate qualification. MFD does not require an EMT to apply, but arriving with it means you start the post-hire 12/24/48-month EMT → AEMT → Paramedic progression at a better position. The 3-year paramedic mandate still applies. Source: original Quora question and answers.
What does Memphis Fire actually require to hire a paramedic?
Two tracks. Firefighter Paramedic Lateral: TN NFPA Firefighter I and II plus EMT or AEMT, 2 years full-time fire service (or 5 volunteer), ages 19–45, paramedic within 24–36 months depending on entry level. Single-Role Paramedic: current state paramedic license (reciprocity eligible) and prior NREMT paramedic, age ≤50 at hire, Shelby County residence within 6 months. How does the Memphis Fire lateral hiring process work?
The lateral posting is a standing track separate from the Fire Recruit cycle. Candidates need TN NFPA Firefighter I and II plus EMT or AEMT (or reciprocity eligible), ages 19–45, and 2 years full-time fire service (or 5 volunteer). MFD uses interviews plus a fitness matrix in place of a written entrance exam (JEMS); the paramedic-within-3-years mandate still governs continued employment. Source: Firehouse Forums. Local context
MFD runs a paramedic-dominant, fire-based EMS model. It is the primary 911 EMS provider and, per the city, "the largest EMS system in the state of Tennessee and the mid-south". ~35 ambulances daily plus paramedics on fire apparatus (memphistn.gov). Its own CoAEMSP-recognized training center is "the only non-university or college in the State of Tennessee authorized to educate paramedics," and every firefighter must hold a Paramedic license within 3 years of hire (JEMS). A Memphis firefighter career is functionally a paramedic career. After MFD restructured recruitment in 2017, the department reports 800+ hires across 40 states, 75% retention, and a 60% reduction in paramedic attrition (same JEMS source).
Outside MFD, civilian options are narrow. Shelby County Fire operates separately outside city limits with its own ambulance complement (firedepartment.shelbycountytn.gov). Private interfacility transport is handled by Baptist Ambulance / Priority Ambulance and Acadian Ambulance.
